5 Braces Tips Every Orthodontic Patient Should Know

by | Aug 7, 2018 | Braces, oral hygiene

At White, Greer & Maggard Orthodontics, we do everything we can to make the time you spend wearing braces as smooth and problem-free as possible. However, some minor (and not so minor) problems with your braces can pop up. When something unexpected happens that damages your braces or your mouth, please call our office location closest to you so we can help you solve the problem. To ensure that you’re prepared for unexpected problems that can happen with your braces, please take note of these five handy tips!

Carry Orthodontic Wax With You

Orthodontic wax can be a real lifesaver if you have a loose bracket, band or wire that’s causing irritation instead of trying to repair the loose part yourself, it’s best to just cover the sharp, irritating end with some orthodontic wax and then call us for further instructions. We recommend carrying wax with you so you always have some on hand when and if you need it.

Only Remove Your Elastics When Eating & Cleaning Your Teeth

If your braces have small hooks, you should wear your elastics (rubber bands) all the time except when you’re eating and brushing your teeth. This will prevent the hooks from rubbing or getting caught on your cheeks. Your treatment will also progress quickly if you keep those rubber bands on your braces except at mealtimes and when you’re maintaining good oral hygiene.

Carry a Braces-Care Kit With You

To make sure you always have everything you need to clean your teeth and braces and to address small problems you may face, we recommend carrying a braces care kit with you to school or work. Just fill a small zippered pouch or a plastic container with your toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and orthodontic wax. This way, you’ll always have everything you need to take good care of your teeth and braces while you’re out and about.

Rinse With Salt Water if You Have Discomfort

It’s common to experience some minor discomfort when you’re wearing braces, and especially right after your braces are first put on and following your adjustment appointments. A quick and easy solution is to rinse your mouth out with warm salt water. Just dissolve one teaspoon of salt in warm water, rinse your mouth out well, then spit the water out. If that doesn’t work, you can take an over-the-counter pain medication according to the package directions.

Never Stop Smiling!

Even if you feel a little self-conscious about having braces on your teeth, it’s important to keep smiling! When you smile often, it’s contagious! Plus, people will notice your mouth more if you tend to cover your teeth when talking or laughing so be proud of your braces and let them show!
