Playing Sports With Braces
Getting braces doesn’t mean you’ll have to give up playing your favorite sport for a season or two. Playing sports while in braces can be dangerous for your teeth, gums, tongue, gums and lips if you don’t wear a mouthgaurd. Proper safety equipment will allow you to play sports all year round without having to worry about your or your child’s braces.
Mouthgaurds for Braces
While mouthgaurds are required for contact sports like football or lacrosse, not all sports require them. If you are wearing braces, however, mouthgaurds should always be worn while playing sports, regardless of the amount of contact involved. You should always wear a mouthgaurd while wearing braces and playing sports because the chance of hurting yourself or damaging your braces is much higher. It’s also important to wear the proper mouthgaurd while wearing braces designed specifically to accommodate your braces. Braces mouth guards are a little wider and will also be less conformity than normal mouthgaurds allowing the mouthgaurd to fit while you progress through treatment.
What to do if There’s an Accident
Even with an mouthgaurd on, accidents can happen. Whenever you play any sport there is a chance you can damage your braces or teeth. If you ever break a bracket or wire while playing sports, you should immediately leave the game to avoid further damage or injuries. If the band or bracket is still attached just leave them as is and apply some wax if they are irritating you. If the band or bracket comes off, be sure to find it and bring it in to your next appointment. If anything ever breaks be sure to call our office to determine if you should make a sooner appointment or wait for your regularly scheduled appointment.
