What Causes Crooked Teeth?
Not everyone is born with straight, perfectly aligned teeth – in fact many people have crooked teeth, crowded teeth, spaces between teeth and misaligned bites. There are several reasons why teeth grow crooked and require orthodontic treatment for correction. Most often, crooked teeth are inherited traits of jaw structure just like the color of your eyes are genetic traits which are passed down from generation to generation. Below are some causes of crooked teeth which may require orthodontic treatment using braces or aligners.
- An early loss of primary or permanent teeth
- Improperly fitting dental restorations
- Gingivitis
- Undue pressure on the teeth or gums
- Misalignment of the jaw after surgery
- Jaw or mouth tumors
- Thumb or finger sucking habits
- Tongue thrusting habit
- Pacifier use past the age of three
- Prolonged use of a baby bottle
How Orthodontic Treatment Can Help
When teeth are crooked, orthodontic intervention, with braces or removable aligners, is often necessary to straighten teeth and/or align the bite. While there are several kinds of orthodontic appliances like conventional metal braces, self-aligning braces and removable trays, these appliances all work generally in the same way. Each device applies constant pressure on the teeth in order to move them into the optimal position, carefully determined by your orthodontist.
When your teeth are straight, your oral health improves as it is easier to brush and floss your properly-aligned teeth. You will also experience a boost in self-esteem as your confidence will grow by knowing your smile is attractive.
