Guide to Halloween with Braces
When it comes to breaking a bracket or bending a wire on braces, candy is one of the biggest culprits. Halloween night is not the ideal time to have an emergency with your braces so it’s important to steer clear of the types of candies and other sweet treats that can damage your braces. But just because you’re wearing braces, you don’t have to miss out on all the fun on Halloween because there are still plenty of sweets you can enjoy.
Here are some of the worst types of candy that can break your braces that you must avoid eating when you’re celebrating Halloween – whether you’re out trick-or-treating or having a frightfully fun time at a party!
Chewy Candy
All candies that are chewy can easily bend or break your braces so you must stay away from these sweets including:
- Tootsie Rolls
- Taffy of all types
- Gumdrops
- Starburst
- Skittles
- Jelly Beans
Caramels
Caramel candies, both the hard and soft varieties, can get stuck in your braces to loosen the brackets which are bonded to your teeth, so you must steer clear of these sweets. Some examples are:
- Sugar Babies
- Butterscotch candies
- Tic Tacs
- Life Savers
- Nerds
Candy Containing Nuts
People wearing braces should not eat candy containing nuts because these sweets can bend wires and loosen brackets. Plus, they can make it very hard to clean your teeth and braces well when brushing as tiny bits of nut can become wedged in all those small spaces between teeth and around your appliances. Some common nutty candies to steer clear of include:
- Snickers
- Almond Joy
- Hershey’s with Almonts
- Payday
- Baby Ruth
Candy You Can Eat
The types of candy you can eat without worrying about breaking your braces include:
- All types of pure candy that melts in your mouth
- Peanut Butter Cups
- Mint Patties
You can also safely enjoy cake, cupcakes, and soft cookies as well as more healthy treats like melon, soft fruit, yogurt, berries, and smoothies.
